Older People Being Failed by Labour’s Neglect of Wales’ NHS and Public Services

The Growing Older in Wales report by the Older People’s Commissioner reveals a stark reality for older people — worsening health inequalities, long waits for care, and forgotten communities.

Dr Altaf Hussain, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Equalities & Social Justice, says it lays bare years of Labour mismanagement, where older people are treated as an afterthought.

Delays for GP appointments, operations and care assessments are leaving vulnerable people in pain – with the longest wait recorded at nearly 21 months – while postcode lotteries dictate the standard of healthcare. And as isolation rises, Welsh Labour continues to let vital community services shut their doors.

Commenting on the report Altaf said:

“This report sadly confirms what we have been warning for years — older people in Wales are being continually let down by the failing Welsh Labour Government with nearly 70% dissatisfied with their social care.

“Record NHS waits, stretched social care and vanishing community services show how Welsh Labour’s lack of leadership is hitting older people hardest — with many saying it’s now twice as hard to see a GP compared to only three years ago.

“After 25 years in power, Labour has run out of excuses. Wales needs leadership that delivers dignity, fairness and real support for older people — not ill-judged plans for a ‘digital NHS’ that risk leaving them further isolated and excluded.

“We the Welsh Conservatives have been clear about our plan to cut NHS waiting lists, with priority given to procedures that restore independence and quality of life. A renewed focus on tackling health inequalities, ensuring access to care is based on need and access — not postcode.

“The message from this report is clear — Wales’ older generation deserves better. Labour isn’t listening. The Welsh Conservatives are.”

Mae Pobl Hŷn yn Cael eu Methu gan Angofrwydd y Blaid Lafur o GIG Cymru a Gwasanaethau Cyhoeddus Adroddiad Growing Older in Wales gan Gomisiynydd Pobl Hŷn yn datgelu realiti teg ar gyfer pobl hŷn — cynydd mewn anghydraddoldebau iechyd, aros hir am ofal, a chymunedau wedi'u hanfarwoli.

Dywed Dr Altaf Hussain, Ysgrifennydd Cysgodol y Cabinet dros Cydraddoldebau a Chyfiawnder Cymdeithasol, ei fod yn datgelu blynyddoedd o gamreoli gan Lafur, lle mae pobl hŷn yn cael eu hystyried fel ar ôl-ymateb.

Mae oediadau ar gyfer apwyntiadau Meddyg Teulu, gweithdrefnau llaw a phrisio gofal yn gadael pobl fregus mewn poen – gyda'r aros hiraf wedi'i gofnodi tua 21 mis – tra bod loterïau cod post yn penderfynu safon y gofal iechyd. Ac wrth i unigrwydd gynyddu, mae Llafur Cymru yn parhau i ganiatáu i wasanaethau cymunedol hanfodol gau eu drysau.

Wrth siarad am y adroddiad dywedodd Altaf:

"Mae'r adroddiad hwn, tristwch, yn cadarnhau'r hyn rydym wedi bod yn rhybuddio amdano ers blynyddoedd — mae pobl hŷn yng Nghymru yn cael eu gadael yn ddiofal gan Lywodraeth Lafur Cymru sy'n methu gyda bron 70% ddim yn fodlon â'u gofal cymdeithasol.

"Mae'r arosiadau record ar y GIG, gofal cymdeithasol gorlawn a gwasanaethau cymunedol sy'n diflannu yn dangos sut mae diffyg arweinyddiaeth Llywodraeth Lafur Cymru yn taro pobl hŷn yn fwyaf caled — gyda llawer yn dweud bod yn awr yn ddwywaith yn anoddach gweld meddyg teulu o gymharu â dim ond tair blynedd yn ôl.

“Ar ôl 25 mlynedd mewn pŵer, mae Llafur wedi rhedeg allan o esgusodion. Mae angen ar Gymru arweinyddiaeth sy’n darparu urddas, tegwch a chymorth gwirioneddol i bobl hŷn — nid cynlluniau cymhwyso’n anaddas i ‘GIG digidol’ sy’n risgio eu gadael yn fwy wedi’u huno a’u heithrio.

“Rydym ni'r Ceidwadwyr Cymreig wedi bod yn glir ynghylch ein cynllun i dorri rhestrau aros y GIG, gyda blaenoriaeth yn cael ei rhoi i weithdrefnau sy’n adfer hunaniaeth ac ansawdd bywyd. Ffocws newydd ar fynd i’r afael ag anghydraddoldebau iechyd, sicrhau bod mynediad at ofal yn seiliedig ar angen ac mynediad — nid cod post.

“Mae neges yr adroddiad hwn yn glir — mae genhedlaeth hŷn Cymru’n haeddu gwell. Nid yw Llafur yn gwrando. Mae’r Ceidwadwyr Cymreig yn gwneud.
