We're in a cost-of-living crisis making life difficult for lower paid people particularly, after a series of extreme events but above all Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine followed by energy price problems. Despite this though, county councils currently consider an above inflation increase to taxes whilst Wales's Labour government's flawed formula encourages bad behaviour by highly-paid Cabinet Members e.g. Leaders getting paid £66,727 & Deputy Leaders on salaries of £40,036.
My Conservative colleague Laura Anne Jones (Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Local Government) has since stated, "Residents across Wales are facing inflation-busting council tax rises thanks to a broken funding system and out-of-control pay-packets at county hall... It's time for the Welsh Government to stand on the side of taxpayers.” I absolutely agree, hard-working people are already stretched so thinly through these tough times.
Households face sky-high council taxes though don't even feel local authorities are doing basics well.
It's not good enough!
