I AM calling on Welsh Government to respond to allegations that, along with NHS Wales, it violated the human rights of patients during the Covid pandemic by putting Do Not Resuscitate notices on people in care homes including those with learning difficulties.
I want Welsh Government, which has refused to hold its own inquiry into the way that it responded to the pandemic, to institute investigations into possible human rights breaches.
This is just one area of concern about how the Welsh Government acted during Covid. We have recently seen a court ruling on the way in which patients in England were discharged from hospital into care homes without having been tested first for Covid. This action has been ruled unlawful and there are massive implications here for Welsh Government which did exactly the same. Many vulnerable residents in our care homes were exposed to the risks of Covid needlessly when we had the First Minister saying at the time that he saw no value in mass testing.
His actions and those of his government must be held up to public scrutiny in a wide ranging public inquiry as will be taking place in England and Scotland. This is not to lay blame but to ensure that mistakes that were made then are not repeated should we ever find ourselves in the throes of a pandemic in future.
