Leading a debate in the Welsh Parliament, retired Orthopaedic surgeon turned politician, Dr Altaf Hussain MS, has urged everyone to take action to prevent falls and fractures in later life. Addressing the Senedd chamber Dr Hussain outlined the research he undertook into mortality rates following hip fractures and pointed to the fact that Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis are the leading chronic conditions in the elderly affecting almost 50% of people aged 65 and above.
With increasing waits for Orthopaedic surgery, sometimes up to 6 years, Dr Hussain said that we needed to do things differently, focusing efforts on prevention and outlined the simple steps everyone could take to improve their joints and bones.
